Room with a View

This is a first of a series of articles about selecting the right accommodations for an awe filled trip. I am exploring the topic because I find myself always pushing toward the higher prices whenever I can and the upgrades are not always necessary. There are some rooms out there with some GREAT views! It is hard to decide whether or not to pay more for those awemazing views.

It is important to have your own criteria when planning so that when  decision fatigue sets in you don’t waste extra money. Creating a series of questions to ask yourself can help with some questions about a room with a view.

1.    Will I spend much time in the room enjoying the upgraded room view?

2.    Could I enjoy the view from the less expensive rooms?

3.     Is there a lot of good space on the property where I can enjoy all that the view has to offer in other settings…outside of my room?

4.     Does the higher price cut into my budget in a way that effects other parts of this experience?

The answers to these questions can help you decide. For number one, if you won’t spend much time in the room…which is often the case…that is one NO vote for the room with a view. Number two is one that most people hardly ever consider, unless it is clear that the alternative view is of the parking lot. When the view is of the gardens or the mountains instead of the Ocean…why not? (Especially if the answer to number 3 is yes!) The third question, also often overlooked, can almost always be determined by looking at the website or trip advisor photos. If you can find great places on the property to enjoy the view then the view from your room may be worth less money. If you still can’t decide after the first three questions, think about the impact on the budget a little more closely. You know your budget, will the extra cost of the room with a view cause you to have to cut in other areas? Of course it is never easy to decide but I hope these questions help you make your decision!

My next post will show an analysis of several recent trips….was the room with a view worth the money?
