The Awe of Sunrises and Sunsets

Sunrises and sunsets are awe inspiring to almost everyone! My husband is the only person I know that hasn’t always been true for. As a child he thought the sunset was Earth catching on fire like he heard about as the last days described in the Bible. But…even he is coming around! I may have helped by seeking unique sunrise and sunset experiences almost everywhere we go!

At home or on the road, it is easy to google the local sunrise and sunset times. The sunrise where I live is right when I am on my way to work. I actually look forward to getting out the door to watch the sunrise on my way to work. Like me, you may have to set your alarm for sunrises when you are on vacation. Each sunrise and sunset is unique – completely different experiences. Planing meal times and activity times around local sunrises and sunsets is a great strategy. Perfect opportunities just happen sometimes, but other times it takes a great plan to enjoy that great moment!

Sunrise (Santa Barbara, CA)

Once you know the times, you need to consider the best vantage points. For this, you can turn to the map. You you can select locations that face the right direction in order to see the perfect sunrise and sunsets. (Of course everyone knows…the sun rises in the East and sets in the West. I will always remember Never Eat Soggy Waffles – the mnemonic that I learned in elementary school for cardinal directions.) You can select hotels, restaurants, activities, or just  viewing sites once you determine this orientation. Also, you can look for an edge…the waterfront, is easiest to see on the map. (It is also my favorite for viewing because of the reflection…it’s like the beauty is doubled.) Just selecting a spot on the right side of the water makes all the difference (if that is an option.) In Philadelphia, it is best to get out on the water or cross the bridge to Jersey so that the sun sets behind the city. Another great option is to get higher than the local terrain – rooftop restaurants, bluffs, etc. The Top of the Rock in NYC is a great spot if you time it right!

Sunset from the Delaware River (Philadelphia, PA)

Trip Advisor and Google searches can also help you locate best sunsets or best sunrises in most any location. Once you have the time and the best vantage point – get ready to feel the awe. If you get really good at it…you might even be able to catch two sunsets in one day. How could that happen? I have only been so lucky one time. I was on a sunset boat cruise in Connecticut. I snapped several pictures as the sun was setting and then as we traveled to a different vantage point it was as if the sun rose back up and I got a chance to catch the whole thing again! I could hardly believe it but I did experience it that one time. Good luck! I hope you find the perfect vantage point for awe!
